The Memory of the World program was initiated in 1997 by UNESCO in order to preserve and promote world documentary heritage of universal importance. The World Documentary Heritage register is the equivalent of the World Heritage List of properties of cultural importance. To date, 120 manuscripts, archives and collections from 57 countries of the world have been included in this world register.
